Blurb (from goodreads):
Flying smack into a new existence, literally, sophomore high school student, Mia Frare, finds herself able to alter her body at will to that of a 3½-foot-tall bird. WHY I MUST LIE is a two week chronicle of Mia’s transformation and induction into a hidden spiritual world. While adapting to her new abilities, such as amplified hearing, acute eyesight, and what Mia refers to as, “freakishly strong feet”, she finds herself drawn to three other students in her overcrowded high school. Possessing supernatural talents of their own, Gabe and his two sisters befriend Mia and invite her along on their rescue missions. Although Mia’s growing closeness to Gabe poses difficulties he can’t ignore, it’s evident that the four are meant to join forces in averting tragedy and seeking the truth regarding Mia’s emergence.

16-year-old Mia is shocked when she wakes in naked in the forest one night. Having no idea what has happened, she makes her way home, only to discover that the screen door over her window is broken, and her nightclothes on the ground beneath.
Retracing her steps the next days, something truly amazing happens. Mia finds herself transforming into a bird and flying! Not know what is happening to her, Mia keeps quiet about her new skill, and begins researches birds, she also questions her grandfather over a brother that he had who was put away for being mentally ill. If people knew what she could do would they label her mentally ill as well?
At school she is in for another shock though, when the mysterious Gabe Michaels begins to take an interest in her, and even more shocking when she learns that he can speak to her telepathically! When Gabe recognises her in her bird form though, she knows that he’s not 100% normal either. Why can Mia transform into a bird though? Will she ever be able to confide in her family? And what does Gabe Michaels have to do with it?
This was an enjoyable read. Mia was a really sweet character and did her best to keep up with her school work and help out with her younger siblings. She tried to stay safe whilst flying, and tried to use her new-found confidence to help others. Strangely her new ability did give her more confidence and power than she had previously, and it was nice to see how she grew as a person.
I have to say that I really liked Gabe; he was just so sweet and lovely, and selfless. I liked the relationship that he had with his sisters, although at times he really did take being ‘good’ to an extreme. I liked the romance between Mia and Gabe, although I would have liked for it to have been taken to the next level (maybe a bit of kissing!). Totally loving Gabe though!
The storyline was pretty full as we followed Mia from the beginning of her transformation into a bird, and focused not only on her transformation, but also on her family life as well. I enjoyed the final showdown, and I’m really interested to find out what happens next!

Interview with the Author - Michele!
When did you start writing?
Being an accountant by trade, I never thought I'd write a novel. However, after hearing me go on and on about how I thought books should end or where I thought the plot should have gone, my husband finally said, "Why don't you just write your own book?" Three years ago, I took up his challenge and my first novel was published in January. It's been an incredibly fulfilling experience, and...wait a minute...I should probably go thank my husband!
What was your inspiration for ‘Why I Must Lie’?
Drawn to supernatural books and movies, I really wanted to create something in that genre. I'm also a huge superhero fan, and I wanted my characters to possess not only amazing powers to save the day, but a fantastic purpose for doing so.
What three words would you use to best describe ‘Why I Must Lie’?
Refreshing - My favorite comment on the book, provided by a bookstore owner in my home town.
Blessing - It truly has been one for me, and I hope it is to some of those who read it.
Purposeful - For the characters, as they embrace their calling in a very normal world, and for me personally on so many levels.
What are your favourite things about Mia and Gabe?
Thank you for having me ponder this! I can't stop smiling while thinking of them. My favorite aspects of these characters and their relationship is their innocence, humility, faith in each other, and the increasing anticipation for Gabe to allow something more between them.
How do you think you would react if you found out that your other half was actually an angel?
Shocked! In many ways he has been an angel to me, especially through his support of my writing and this series. However, I would wonder why an angel was called to the golf course so often.
Can we expect to hear more from Mia and Gabe?
Absolutely! The sequel will throw more at these two angels, including the continuous struggle to resist one another.
Other than your own, what are your favourite books?
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong, so many by Dean Koontz and Lisa Garner, and anything by Dan Brown
Random Question; What is your favourite treat?
Jelly beans...especially the pink ones!
